Nestled at the intersection of Dorp and Wolfsdonksesteenweg in the heart of Herselt, De Hessel stands as a testament to thoughtful urban development. This completed project comprises 32 contemporary apartments, 2 exclusive penthouses, and a ground-floor commercial space now home to Delhaize. Designed by Atrium Architecten and developed by VIVO² Development, De Hessel offers residents a serene living environment with all conveniences within reach.
The project site—located between the town hall and the church—demanded a design that would reinforce the identity of the village core while addressing several practical needs. The client was looking for:
A mix of residential units tailored to different life stages
A qualitative integration of a local supermarket
Enhanced soft mobility and accessible outdoor areas
Architecture that respects the scale and rhythm of the surroundings
High sustainability standards in line with NZEB principles
To meet these objectives, the volume was intentionally set back from the street, allowing space for a green public forecourt. The building is divided into two linked volumes with a shared underground car park beneath. This split design ensures optimal daylight for all units, while creating space for a landscaped courtyard at the rear.
All residential units were constructed to Nearly Zero-Energy Building (NZEB) standards, with an E-level below 20. Energy-efficient technologies such as solar panels, ventilation with heat recovery, and airtight construction were seamlessly integrated. Attention was also paid to acoustic comfort, high-end interior finishing, and generous private outdoor spaces.
The surroundings were transformed into a semi-public green zone with fruit trees, wildflowers, seating areas, and footpaths—inviting both residents and passersby to enjoy the space and connect.
